How to Verify Research Peptide Quality and Purity

Purity verification is the foundation of reliable peptide research. Understanding quality documentation and how to evaluate it protects your work from compromised compounds.

Why purity matters in research peptide applications

In laboratory research, compound purity directly affects experimental outcomes. A peptide at 95% purity contains 5% unknown impurities that may interact with your research systems in unpredictable ways. In sensitive protocols, even small purity differences can produce measurably different results.

Understanding the Certificate of Analysis (CoA)

A Certificate of Analysis is the main quality document for research compounds. A legitimate CoA contains specific technical information:

  • HPLC purity percentage: High-Performance Liquid Chromatography results, expressed as a percentage. Research-grade compounds are generally ≥98% pure
  • Molecular weight confirmation: mass spectrometry data confirming the compound's identity
  • Batch/lot number: ties the CoA to a specific production batch
  • Testing date: recent dates indicate current batch testing
  • Testing laboratory: the facility that performed the analysis

Tip: a CoA without a batch number is a generic document that can't be verified as applying to your order. Ask for batch-specific documentation.

HPLC testing explained

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography is the standard method for peptide purity assessment. It separates the components of a sample and measures the relative abundance of each, producing a purity percentage for the target compound.

When reviewing HPLC results, look for one dominant peak (the target compound) with minimal secondary peaks (impurities). Purity above 98% with a clean chromatogram is the benchmark for research-grade material.

Mass spectrometry verification

Mass spectrometry (MS) confirms identity by measuring molecular mass. The observed mass should match the peptide's theoretical molecular weight within tolerance, confirming the compound is what it claims to be.

Questions to ask your supplier

  • "Is documentation available for this specific batch?"
  • "What purity threshold do your compounds meet?" The research-grade standard is ≥98%
  • "Are your compounds third-party tested?" Independent testing adds verification
  • "How are compounds stored before shipping?" Temperature stability affects integrity

Storage and purity

Even high-purity compounds can degrade if stored or shipped improperly. See our guide on how to store research peptides.
