How to Store Research Peptides Properly

Proper storage keeps research peptides intact. The wrong conditions can degrade compounds and compromise your results.

Why proper storage matters

Peptide integrity depends on storage conditions. Heat, humidity, light and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can degrade structure, reduce purity and compromise results.

Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide storage

Most research peptides are supplied lyophilized: freeze-dried powder in a sealed vial. This form is far more stable than solutions. General guidelines:

  • Long-term (months to years): −20 °C or −80 °C in a stable freezer
  • Short-term (days to weeks): 2–8 °C refrigeration is fine for many compounds
  • Moisture: let vials reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation
  • Light: store in the dark or in opaque containers

Good practice: let frozen vials warm to room temperature before opening. Opening a cold vial pulls in moisture that speeds up degradation.

Reconstituted peptide storage

Once reconstituted, peptides are stable for much shorter periods:

  • Short-term (days): refrigerate at 2–8 °C
  • Avoid freeze-thaw cycles: prepare single-use aliquots
  • Use the right solvent: bacteriostatic water is the most common; some peptides need dilute acetic acid

Compound-specific considerations

Peptide classes differ in sensitivity to temperature, light and oxidation. Check available stability data for each compound you work with.

Documenting storage conditions

Record storage conditions, reconstitution dates and handling for each compound. It supports reproducibility and helps trace any storage-related anomalies.
